You can block Instagram on iPhone with built-in Screen Time. The useful part is picking the setup that matches what you actually fail at: the app icon, Safari, reinstalls, or the moment you tap Ignore Limit.
Do this first
- Open Settings, search Screen Time, open the first result.
- Tap App Limits → Add Limit → pick Instagram → set a short daily time → turn on Block at End of Limit (you need a Screen Time passcode for the strongest block).
- If Safari is your escape hatch, also block
instagram.comunder Content & Privacy Restrictions → App Store, Media, Web, & Games → Web Content → Never Allow. - If you delete Instagram and keep reinstalling it, set Installing Apps to Don't Allow under iTunes & App Store Purchases in those same restrictions.
Apple's own overview of restrictions lives here: Block apps, app downloads, websites, and purchases on iPhone.
Block the Instagram app with App Limits
This is the path most people mean by "block Instagram."
- Settings → search Screen Time → open it.
- Tap App Limits (under Limit Usage: "Set time limits for apps.").
- Tap Add Limit, choose Instagram (not the whole Social category unless you want that).
- Set the time. A one-minute or fifteen-minute cap is common when the real goal is "almost none."
- Turn on Block at End of Limit.
- Add a Screen Time passcode if you have not already (Lock Screen Time Settings). Without it, Block at End of Limit is weak or missing.
When time is up, Instagram should gray out. If you still see an easy Ignore Limit and you know the passcode, the limit is a reminder, not a wall.
Close the Safari loophole
Instagram in Safari is a different door. Blocking the app does not block the site.
- Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → turn it on.
- App Store, Media, Web, & Games → Web Content.
- Choose Limit Adult Websites, then under Never Allow add
instagram.com(and any other Instagram host you actually use).
Test it: open Safari and try Instagram. If the page still loads, the URL you blocked is not the one Safari is hitting. Fix the list before you trust the setup.
Phone only, keep Instagram on Mac
People ask this a lot after they delete Instagram from the phone but still want the desktop site at home.
Screen Time can sync across your Apple devices. If Share Across Devices is on, a phone block can follow you to Mac and iPad.
On the iPhone: Screen Time → turn Share Across Devices off (wording can read as sharing across devices on your Apple Account). Set App Limits and Never Allow on the iPhone. Leave the Mac alone. Confirm the Mac still opens Instagram while the phone does not.
A home Wi‑Fi router block only works on that network. It will not help on cellular, which is usually when the scroll starts.
Delete Instagram, then stop reinstalls
Deleting the app removes the icon. It does not stop you from downloading it again at 11pm.
- Delete Instagram.
- Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → iTunes & App Store Purchases.
- Set Installing Apps to Don't Allow.
You can still need Messages, Phone, or other apps. Use Always Allowed (under Limit Usage) so those stay available during Downtime or limits. Always Allowed does not fix Ignore Limit on Instagram itself. It only keeps the apps you still need reachable.
"Just delete it" and other advice
Deleting Instagram helps some people. For others the job is different: you still need to message family or reply to a story, and the problem is staying for two hours after a fifteen-minute limit. Uninstalling removes the bad loop and the useful access together.
Hiding Safari is a blunt fix. It blocks more than Instagram. Unfollowing everyone can reduce noise, but it is not a block. Router blocks fail off Wi‑Fi.
When Screen Time is not enough
If your pattern is: open Instagram for a message → tap Ignore Limit → lose the evening, a daily timer is the wrong tool. You already proved you will override it.
That is the case for harder friction at open time. Manaya uses Apple's shielding on your iPhone. Put Instagram in a group, pick how hard it is to open (a short Wait, or a full stop), and keep Messages or lighter apps on a different strength if you want. You still have Instagram for real replies. The feed does not start for free. You can still change things in iPhone Settings.
If you want to keep Instagram
Blocking is one goal. Keeping the app without the long scroll is another. See How to use Instagram without doomscrolling.
